Faramir is afraid Beregond will be punished severely for breaking the law when saving him from Denethor’s madness.

Upon becoming King, Aragorn had not brought Beregond to trial at once. What happened in the meantime? Where was Beregond, and what part did Faramir play in the matter?
Perhaps the Steward was afraid the King would not be merciful, and thought he would have to seduce Aragorn into forgiving Beregond? Or maybe, thinking Beregond would have to face death penalty, he wished to ‘thank’ the Guard for his self-effacing devotion…?
