Summary: Éomer can’t seem to accept the bond between Faramir and Boromir. Written for faramir_fics Drabble Challenge, `Legacy’—it’s a bit long for a true drabble, but I hope it is okay anyway. This occurs some time after the drabble-fic `First Love’ and the drabble `Inheriting Tomorrow.’

Éomer sat down heavily upon the stone bench in the King’s Garden, the birds chirping gaily around his head. The birds and beauty about him registered little as he swore under his breath.

“Damn you, Faramir,” he wiped at his face as a breeze whipped blond strands across it.

Faramir’s pleading for his understanding still rang in Éomer’s ears. How could he understand? It was not right for Faramir to expect him to just accept that Boromir would always be between them— that if there was a choice, Faramir would choose Boromir over him every single time.

“Damn you…”

“May I sit with you?” A quiet voice asked him.

Éomer looked up to see Lúthien standing expectantly nearby, a kind smile upon her face.

“Yes, of course, My Lady.” Éomer stood as she sat down on the bench.

“I adore this garden.”

Éomer made a non-committal response, smiling in what he hoped was a pleasant way; but he was not in the mood for small-talk with Boromir’s wife.

Lúthien looked at her companion in sympathy. She had not meant to eavesdrop, but she witnessed the Rohirric’s argument with Faramir. She had only heard the tail end, but she gathered that Éomer did not like it that he was never invited to go with Boromir and Faramir on their daily sojourns into the city or on rides when they wanted to talk. Lúthien understood Éomer’s upset as she, too had to get use to the brothers private moments that did not include her; but she came to accept it and she knew that if Éomer wanted a life with her brother-in-law, then he would have to accept it as well.

“Faramir was six when his mother died—did you know that?” Lúthien inquired.

Éomer came out of his dark mood long enough to stare and then answer, “I did know that. Faramir told me.”

“Boromir adored Faramir from the very first and his mother made sure that he learned to care for Faramir from that time. It is almost as if she knew that she would not be there for either of them before long.”

Éomer did not say anything as he listened; then she continued on, “They only had the other after Finduilas was laid to rest. Lord Denethor loved Boromir, but he never seemed to show the same love for Faramir; so it fell to Boromir to give him the love he needed.

“I did not understand their closeness at first, but I came to realize that if their bond did not exist, then I would not have the Boromir that I now adore.” She looked into Éomer’s hazel eyes as he took in her words.

“Their love was there at the beginning and it is their legacy to each other and to us. Do you like the person Faramir is now?” She asked quietly.

“I love him…”

“No,” she cut in kindly. “Do you like him?”

Éomer smiled broadly at that. “I do like him very much!”

“Then you owe that to Boromir because his love and care helped to create the Faramir you see. I shudder to think what either of them would be like if they had not had the other.”

“But how can you stand knowing that Boromir loves Faramir more than…” Éomer stopped, not wanting to hurt her.

“I have accepted that Faramir comes first before all others with Boromir. I could have refused to marry him or try and force him to choose me over him, but I would have lost and the alternative would have been unthinkable.

“I would not have this life or my son now and I would not have the most wonderful brother that ever lived; that is how I see Faramir and I love him—how could I not? The only person who managed that feat is now a pile of ashes upon the wind.” She touched Éomer’s arm as she leaned closer.

“Go to him if you love him and don’t dismiss Boromir; he is a great ally to have on your side—a kind and strong man he is. He can’t be too bad if Faramir loves him, now can he?” She laughed gaily.

Éomer’s smile was genuine this time and he surprised Lúthien by pulling her into a big hug before jumping up to go find his beloved. As he left the garden, he nearly rammed into the object of his thoughts.

“Faramir—I was just coming…”

“Éomer—I am so sorry…” They both began at the same time and then stopped as they gazed at the other with such love.

Éomer spoke first, “You have nothing to be sorry for, my dear Faramir—I was wrong to try and interfere.”

“It is just that…”

“You and Boromir have always been there for the other and you adore him—I understand that now and I would not change it or you for all the world. Please, go to Boromir and spend as much time as you need to and I will be here when you return. I love you Faramir and,” he paused thinking of Lúthien, “I like you, too!”

Faramir laughed, pulling Éomer into a fierce hug much as Éomer had done to Lúthien. Then they kissed tenderly before Faramir went in search of Boromir.

“I will wait for you until the time ends, my sweet Faramir,” Éomer whispered before returning to the garden.

Oh what a lovely fic. To hear that someone like you as well as love you was a wonderful thing to write. Thank you so much for this.

I wish that I too can someday experience that. Again lovely, sweet and absolutely perfect.
