With the first green sprouts of spring came new hopes and Faramir stood at the window in the tower, lulled by a pleasant memory which did not seem so far away in the past now.

He had found a friend in King Théoden’s nephew, a friend like few men could consider themselves lucky to have. He remembered the first time they had met, being formally introduced and, as he had prepared for a courteous bow, Éomer has caught him in a bear hug, shaking and squeezing him into dizziness. Faramir had been perplexed; in Gondor, boys and especially him, weren’t encouraged to be physical and to seek closeness. And Éomer had treated him like a brother from the very first moment.

They would become brothers, but later, Faramir had known it since then. The following evening, tucked under the fur in his bed at Edoras, he had dreamt the destiny of Éomer in vivid detail. The boy he had been had found the knowledge too much of a burden to carry, so the images had been repressed and only the feelings of warmth, friendship, closeness and admiration had made it into the foreground of his consciousness.

Now, the man he had become was looking forward to the moment when he would gaze into the majestic hazel eyes anew. The object of his admiration was coming to give away his sister Éowyn, whom Faramir himself was going to marry.

Blue and hazel eyes greeted and warmed, swimming in a little more wetness than usual, all in ceremonial silence as the High King held his speech. Faramir could barely make out the distant words, and he could bet Aragorn’s Rohirric counterpart was in the same situation.

Seeing his feelings so brightly reflected in Éomer’s amazing eyes, Faramir understood what his friend was telling him in silence. The marriage would take place and the politics would be settled, but they had been reunited and their bond would be re-forged, stronger than anything around them.

Faramir wondered briefly if he was not seeking to partially fill the lonely void Boromir had left in him, or, if worse, he was becoming as indiscriminating as his King when lust surged. Gazing furtively at Éomer, Faramir’s suspicions were silenced. The King of Rohan was indeed a sight for sore eyes and most men and maidens would feel lucky to be allowed near him, but the playful glint in the changing hazel eyes was meant for Faramir alone. And if Faramir remembered correctly, Éomer could barely wait to be able to sneak away to put grease on Aragorn’s bedroom door knob and to fill his long time friend’s boots with berry jam.

Éomer moved through the crowd to come and stand near Faramir, sneaking a hand down to grasp the Gondorian’s gloved one. As Aragorn coughed and frowned fleetingly at them, they both straightened their stance and smiled mischievously, assuming oddly similar pleading faces, but even under the King’s stern almost-glare, Éomer did not let go of Faramir’s hand. Not after having waited do long for them to be reunited.
